The valley is also a natural shaped valley just west close to the Pacific Ocean. It is elevated to about 200 feet (60 m) and sits on the intersection of Highway 101 and Santa Maria River. The grapes are grown at an altitude of 300 feet (90 m). The soil is clay based and rich in nutrients great for agriculture. The sun shines a lot of days in one year and this makes growing plants an easy task. All in all Santa Maria deserves the name of Wine Valley.
